The Campout

$5.00

This sketch is about a group of teens on a hike with their youth leader. As they arrive at their camp site, they begin a discussion on who their heroes are, whether a sports star, movie star, pop star, etc.

One of them brings up how Jesus should be our only real hero and object of our worship. The gospel is shared briefly and one of the kids shares his testimony. There is some humor mixed in.

Six actors (3 male, 3 female) around 7-8 mins.

Excerpt:

SCENE ONE:
Several students and an adult leader enter with backpacks and wearing hiking gear.
ARNIE
This looks like a good spot. Let’s make camp here.
BETTE
It’s about time! My feet are so tired!
CLIVE
You think yours are tired…. I left my feet along the trail about two miles back!
DYLAN
Do you want me to go back and get them? My feet are just fine.
ERICA
Oh no! Here it comes! Now we’re going to hear about Dylan’s great new shoes again!
ARNIE
Who wants to gather some wood for a fire?
ERICA
Send Dylan. His feet aren’t even tired.
DYLAN
I could go.
He walks offstage to get a few sticks
FANNY
Are we going to sleep out under the stars tonight?
ARNIE
If you’d like.
FANNY
I’ve never done that before.
Everyone starts undoing their backpacks and pulling out the sleeping bags.
BETTE
Seriously?
CLIVE
I think our Fanny has led a sheltered life.
FANNY
My family just didn’t go camping much.
BETTE
But didn’t you ever just go out and sleep in the backyard? We used to do that.
FANNY
Too many bugs and creepy crawly things.
ARNIE
Uh oh. You better crawl down into your sleeping bag and zip it closed, then.
Fanny makes a nervous face. Someone rolls out their bag and flips it, hitting someone else and they react by tossing their bag at them knocking them into someone else who falls and this can be a site gag with bags flying and people falling. Then Clive bursts into song, very loud and dramatic and over the top:
CLIVE
(Singing some made-up tune)
OOOOOHHH! The Sleeeeping Bag! The Sleeeeping Bag! The sleeping sleeping sleeping bag! It’s my Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeping BAAAAAG!!
BETTE
Wow… that was good.
DYLAN
(Entering with sticks)
Anybody with sore feet should have gotten some of these great shoes. My feet feel great!
ERICA
Those shoes are not even for hiking, Dylan. They’re athletic shoes. They’re for running and sports and stuff.
DYLAN
Well… hiking is a sport, isn’t it?
CLIVE
I don’t think you can call hiking a sport. It’s more like an activity. Some people don’t even think golf is a sport. But at least there, you are playing a game of competition.
ERICA
Yeah, and we’re just taking a walk in the woods.
DYLAN
Well, you get plenty of exercise. And my feet feel good. Besides, if they’re good enough for Chaz Quatrocinco, then they’re good enough for me.
ARNIE
Those are nice shoes, Dylan. I bet they cost you a lot, too. But I’m afraid Erica is right. I’m sure they’ll be fine, but you’ll never be able to wear them for indoor sports now.
DYLAN
Why not? Chaz Quatrocinco wears them for everything.
ARNIE
All the dirt and rocks getting in there… they’re only good for outdoors now. But hey… we’re outdoors! So…
DYLAN
Why didn’t they tell me that when I bought them?
BETTE
Shoe salesmen don’t care. They just want you to buy the shoes.
DYLAN
But still… if they’re good enough for Chaz Quatrocinco.
ERICA
What? You bought those shoes because of an athlete in a commercial?
DYLAN
He wears them.
ERICA
It’s an endorsement! He gets paid a lot of money to say that he wears them!
DYLAN
I think he really does wear them!
CLIVE
He probably gets them for free. Why not wear them?
ARNIE
I think that’s probably true.
DYLAN
But it’s true what he says in the commercials, ain’t it? I mean, he wouldn’t just be saying that because they pay him, right?
ERICA
They just want people to buy the shoes. It’s all about making money.
DYLAN
Nuh uh…
ERICA
Well, it worked on you, didn’t it?
