Daryl is trying to handle his unemployment the best way he can, and trusting in God for His provision. Meanwhile, his wife, Laurie is dealing with it a little differently. Erica is a single mother who is having a hard time raising two daughters since her husband’s death. The oldest is Hannah, a new believer who is embarrassed that her mom showed up too early to pick her up from rehearsal. Iris and Daryl share with Erica and she prays and makes some decisions about her faith. Daryl receives a call that sounds good for a possible job.

Cast of 9 (2 males, 7 females) Choir optional. Choir Director can be played by a female. Other genders could possibly be changed.  About 20-30 mins.

LIGHTS UP ON:
SCENE ONE:
Choir finishes the opening song… the director speaks up as if this is only a rehearsal.
CHOIR DIRECTOR
That sounded great guys! Why don’t we take a break for a few minutes?
Daryl steps out of the choir as other members start to mingle.
CHOIR DIRECTOR
Oh… Daryl!
DARYL
Yes?
CHOIR DIRECTOR
Did I hear correctly that you lost your job?
DARYL
Yes… I got laid off a few months ago.
CHOIR DIRECTOR
I didn’t know! I just heard about it yesterday. I’m so sorry.
DARYL
Hey… it is what it is. I’m out there knocking on doors and getting my resume sent out… but there just doesn’t seem to be anything going on right now. I know it takes time, but I have heard that some guys just can’t find anything. I might end up slinging burgers.
CHOIR DIRECTOR
I’ll be praying for you.
DARYL
Thanks.
The director exits to where the rest of the choir is quietly waiting as the lights and focus go to the other part of the stage. Daryl sees a woman alone and looking lost.
DARYL
Can I help you?
ERICA
Oh… I just came by to pick up my daughter. I guess she is singing in the choir.
DARYL
What’s her name? I can go find her for you.
ERICA
It’s Hannah. But only if you are all finished. I think I might be early.
DARYL
Oh yeah, you are. … we’re not finished. We just took a break. You might be very early. But I can get her.
ERICA
No… she should stay till you’re finished. I can just wait here. I have nothing else to do.
DARYL
Well, that’s fine. Let me get you a chair. Here’s one.
ERICA
Thank you.
DARYL
We all love your daughter. Hannah is a real asset to the choir.
ERICA
Oh really? I didn’t even know she liked to sing that much. I only found out recently that she was going to this church.
DARYL
Oh… so you don’t attend here?
ERICA
No.
DARYL
Well, will you and your husband be attending the choir musical? It is this weekend.
ERICA
Oh, well, I don’t have a husband. I’m a widow.
DARYL
I’m sorry.
ERICA
I guess it all depends on my work schedule and if I can come. Being a single parent is challenging and I don’t always get to go to my daughter’s functions.
DARYL
Well, I’m sure she would love to have you be here.
ERICA
Hannah is very independent. I mean, I would love to come… but she is used to doing things on her own. Would I be able to bring my little girl? She is very young. I just can’t always afford a sitter.
DARYL
Oh, absolutely… in fact, if you would like, she could stay in the nursery.
ERICA
Oh, she’s not that young!
DARYL
I just mean, we have baby sitting for toddlers. But you are welcome to bring her. There is no cost.
ERICA
Oh…. Well, that might help. I don’t think she would even focus on the fact that her sister is singing in the choir.
DARYL
How old is she?
ERICA
She’ll be three just after Christmas. She is at day care right now… I haven’t picked her up yet. I just got off work..
DARYL
Well, you just let us know if you need anything. I had better get back up there… I think the break is about over. Enjoy the music… you’ll get a little preview.
ERICA
Thank you.
Daryl walks toward the choir loft and sees Hannah.
DARYL
Hannah… your mom is here.
Hannah is surprised and a bit put out. Crossing to her mom.
HANNAH
Mom! What are you doing here?
ERICA
I came to pick you up.
HANNAH
I know, but you are way too early!
ERICA
I guess I messed up.
HANNAH
Well, you can always go and come back later.
ERICA
After this we’re picking up your sister at day care. I might as well wait. This way I can hear you practicing.
HANNAH
Whatever. It’s kind of embarrassing to have you show up now.
ERICA
Don’t be a drama queen. It’s fine. That nice man got me a chair. I’ll just sit here and listen.
Hannah walks back toward the choir loft
