Count All My Blessings

$15.00

This short drama is about taking the time to count your blessings and be thankful for what you have. A window clerk at the post office hears one sad story after another that makes her think twice about her own complaints.

The humor comes from the actress playing the clerk, as she hears the stories, she begins to become emotional and then loses control of her emotions when she hears the fifth story. The point is clearly made… and you can go out with a laugh as this poor woman loses it.

6 actresses. (Some of the parts can be easily re-written to be male) About 10-12 mins.

PATTY
Number 4 please.
CUSTOMER #4
(Approaching)
I probably didn’t even have to wait in line for this… but I didn’t know where to look. I just need a change of address form, Patty.
PATTY
Yes… they are out on the counter. But here you go, Tracy.
CUSTOMER #4
Thank you. I’ll step aside to fill it out.
As she starts filling it out…
CUSTOMER #4
You know… we are losing our home.
PATTY
Oh! Tracy! I didn’t know! I have heard so many sad stories this morning. I am so sorry to hear that, Tracy. Number 5 please! Can I help you?
#5 approaches the counter slowly with a small box.
PATTY
Hello. How fast do you need your package to arrive?
CUSTOMER #5
Speed is not an issue as much as safety. This really needs to get there and be secure and signed for.
PATTY
Perhaps you want to send it registered. That is our most secure mail, kept in a locked pouch and they will have to sign for it.
CUSTOMER #5
That’s it. That’s what I need.
PATTY
Please fill out this form.
CUSTOMER #5
Should I step aside?
PATTY
Well, there’s no one else here at the moment. So, Tracy, tell me more about your house. What happened?
CUSTOMER #4
It’s just one of those things. My husband lost his job and it’s been a hard time.
PATTY
Are you doing okay? How are you handling this?
Patty becomes emotional as she listens to this story and it touches her heart that Tracy is handling it so well.
CUSTOMER #4
Well, its been hard, but you know what? I am realizing that what we have – no one can ever take away. We have each other. And we have faith in God. And there is a lot of peace in that. I know I have a choice to make and that is either to dwell on the negative or embrace the positive. I can either complain about what I don’t have or be grateful for what I do have. I do know this is true: God is good – all the time! And His blessings are always with me. So I thank Him…and just like it says in Philippians 4…I am choosing to think about the things that are good. In fact, even this morning, I made a list of all those things that I am thankful for…just to remind myself.
PATTY
(Trying to remain composed,but fighting)
Thank you for sharing that with me. We all have so much to be thankful for, but I admit that I can quickly forget that.
CUSTOMER #5
I’m ready now.
PATTY
(Pulling herself together)
Okay. Is there anything liquid, fragile or perishable inside?
CUSTOMER #5
Oh no…it just represents the end of what was going to be the most wonderful moment of my life. And it really needs to arrive.
PATTY
I’m sorry? The most wonderful moment?
CUSTOMER #5
(Sniffing)
Yes. That’s right. It’s my engagement ring. But now it’s over.
PATTY
Oh…I’m so sorry.
CUSTOMER #5
Not as sorry as I am. So… of course, he wants it back.
PATTY
(Getting upset)
So…he ended it?
CUSTOMER #5
That’s right. He met someone else. The ring was a family heirloom, so he wants it back…. So he can give it to her! I’m mailing it because I don’t want to see him.
PATTY
(Almost in tears)
Oh, that has to be really hard. You must be heart-broken!
CUSTOMER #5
You don’t know the half of it! I introduced them! She was one of my closest friends! I was going to ask her to be a bridesmaid!
PATTY
(All the emotions have built up so much that she just falls apart and cries harder as she speaks)
Oh! How awful! You must be devastated! Not to mention angry and hurt. Do you need insurance?
CUSTOMER #5
(Still sniffing and weeping a little)
I don’t even know the value of it! How can you put a price on a love that has ended? He was the only man I ever loved! I put stamps on there… will that be enough?
PATTY
(Now crying hard)
Uh huh…that will take care of it! Don’t worry about a thing! The ring will get there! I need a break!
(Yells)
Relief at the window!
(Now heading into hysterics)
I gotta go sit down.
CUSTOMER #4
Patty?
PATTY
I need to call my husband…and my daughter…and my mother…and I need to let them know how much I love them!
(Now crying hard like Lucille Ball)
And I need to take my ring to the jeweler and have it cleaned!!!
(Gasping for air and choking)
And then I need to make a list and COUNT ALL MY BLESSINGS!!
CUSTOMER #5
Lady… are you okay?
PATTY
(Wailing loudly)
I’LL.. BE.. FINE!!
