Excerpt:

ZOE
What’s going on? Why are you sitting over here?
SARA
Josie is having a crisis. She was just about to tell us about it.
JOSIE
I never said I was going to tell you anything!
EMILY
She got an F on her Social Studies test.
ZOE
No way!
EMILY
She didn’t understand the test.
ZOE
I never understand Social Studies!
JOSIE
Okay! Okay! If I tell you, will you all go away and leave me alone?
(they all stare or nod)
My grandmother is in the hospital and she might die! Okay?
SARA
Josie, that’s terrible!
JOSIE
And that’s not all. My dad is interviewing for a new job. If he gets it, we will have to move. The place we are moving to is far away from here and it sounds really awful! It’s in a really big city. My parents are fighting all the time about it! My mom doesn’t want to move. I’m afraid they will split up! I’ve never seen them like this before.
EMILY
Your parents won’t split up. Who knows? Maybe your dad won’t get the job. Man, that’s tough, though.
SARA
You can’t move, Josie!
EMILY
Yeah… we won’t let you move!
JOSIE
You aren’t making it any easier. I’m already so upset about all of this that I think I’m getting sick. I can’t go to sleep at night, and my face is breaking out all over. I’ve also got a cold sore on my mouth and it really hurts!
ZOE
You’re a mess Josie! I sure wouldn’t want to be you!
SARA
Yeah! Cold sores are the worst!
EMILY
Is your grandma old? Because you know…old people die. It happens all the time! It is a part of life, you know.
JOSIE
(with sarcasm)
Oh that makes me feel so much better! I know that, of course. It doesn’t make it any easier. I know that she is a Christian and if she dies, she will go to heaven and be with Jesus. God has a plan for all of our lives. We don’t know when our time is up. I believe that God knows what He is doing and I accept that. He gives and He takes away. I believe all of that.
SARA
If God took my grandma away, I would be really mad! I would probably stop praying to Him and stop going to church! How can you keep loving a God that does stuff like that?
JOSIE
That’s just crazy. I’m not going to be like that. I love God more than anything. He must have a reason for all of this happening to me.
EMILY
You’re right, Josie. You need to figure out what it is that you did.
JOSIE
What I did? I didn’t do anything!
EMILY
You’re being punished! You must have done something bad! You probably need to confess your sin! Your whole life is going to fall apart if you don’t do something!
JOSIE
That can’t be right! Maybe I got an F because I didn’t study hard enough. Only… I did study hard! I think I misunderstood what they wanted us to know! And the other stuff is out of my control! Besides… I don’t have any sins that I haven’t confessed!
SARA
Maybe there is something you forgot. I wouldn’t worry about that, though. Who says Emily is right? We don’t really know anything, do we? We only know what we are told, and who knows if that is right?! Maybe everything we’ve been told is wrong! Maybe you are trying to be a good Christian and devoted to God for nothing!
ZOE
Maybe we are not really here. Maybe we are only part of someone’s imagination. And there are aliens from other planets who are really in charge and running our lives.
(They all turn and look at her with strange expressions)
EMILY
Someone has been watching way too much of the Sci Fi channel.
