Ordinary To Extraordinary

$10.00

This is written as a one-woman monologue, but it could be done with multiple actors. A newswoman (or man) interviews six women from the Bible, each very different, which could allow an actress to show much range, playing several characters.

They include: Leah, Jezebel, Esther, Ruth, Deborah and Mary. If the sketch is too long, it can be easily adapted and shortened by removing some of the characters. One actress. About 9 minutes as written… can be easily shortened.

DEBORAH
I was the only female judge in Israel during Bible times. I used to sit under a palm tree and the people of Israel would come to me with their problems and questions and I would settle their disputes and tell them what they needed to do. So, when the time came for us to go into battle, I called my commander, Barak, and told him to march on the enemy, and he said that he would only do it, if I went with him. Well, I knew that we had to do this because God had commanded it and He also promised us victory…so I told him I would go. But I said that the honor of the victory would not go to him, but it would be said that the Lord delivered the enemy into the hands of a woman! Believe me, in my day, women did not go into battle. But it worked. Not only did we have victory that day, but Barak and I wrote a song together about the whole event.
JUSTINE
Thank you, Deborah. Now we come to the woman who probably fits our description of ordinary to extraordinary more than any other woman in the Bible. Mary, the mother of Jesus. She was still a young woman when an angel appeared to her and told her that she would be the mother of the Son of God.
MARY
I don’t feel that I am anyone special. Obviously, the honor and responsibility of being the mother of Jesus is something that I don’t take lightly. Why I was chosen is a mystery to me. But I have a wonderful husband in Joseph and together we are going to do our best to raise our son, who will grow up to be the Savior of the World. I admit that we are quite overwhelmed with this awesome responsibility and privilege. It was difficult at first, when I was told by the angel, because I could not get my family and Joseph to believe me, and I suppose that is understandable. But then the angel appeared to Joseph, also and he took me as his wife.
