CATIE
I always loved that song! It makes me want to cry.
EMMA
I donāt get it.
CATIE
You donāt get why it makes me want to cry?
EMMA
No! I donāt get the song!
CATIE
Oh.
BECCA
Maybe you should try to see the movie. That might help.
EMMA
Maybeā¦itās just that I donāt see the big thing about the kidās mother dying and then seeing Jesus.
CATIE
Thatās what makes me cry! Itās sad, and yet happy at the same time.
EMMA
Okayā¦I get sad! But happy? There aināt nothing happy about this poor little kidās mother dying. Thatās the part I donāt get! So, she meets Jesusā¦because she died, right? Nothing good about that! Nothing to be happy about.
JENNIFER
Donāt you want to meet Jesus when you die?
EMMA
I donāt want to die! This is not a happy topic! Christmas is supposed to be about being happy, right? You knowā¦ Jingle Bells and Frosty the Snowman.
JENNIFER
Frosty leaves at the end of the story and so itās kind of sad, too.
EMMA
Okayā¦okay! Bad example! Iām just saying!
BECCA
I think you are missing the point, Emma.
EMMA
And what is that?
BECCA
That Christmas is all about Jesus.
EMMA
Itās not ALL about Jesus! There is a lot more to Christmas ā¦that has nothing at all to do with Jesus! The presents, the tree, the decorationsā¦
JENNIFER
Oh, youāre talking about Muss.
EMMA
What?
JENNIFER
Muss!
EMMA
Whatās muss?
JENNIFER
Christmas without Christ. Take Christ out of Christmas and you are left with Muss.
EMMA
Thatās the dumbest thing I ever heard!
JENNIFER
I agree. You canāt take Christ out of Christmas. Christmas is the story of Christ.
EMMA
And where does Santa Claus fit into that whole thing?
JENNIFER
Yeahā¦rightā¦where does he?
TANYA
I know. Santa brings gifts, and the gifts represent the gifts that the wise men brought to Jesus.
EMMA
Wow. Thatās a stretch!
JENNIFER
Yeah, Tanya. I think you would have a hard time making that theory work.
LORI
I believe the origin of Santa Claus was from a man named Saint Nicholas, who gave gifts to children a long time ago. He was a good man and probably did it for Christian reasons, but today, we have gotten far from that.
TANYA
So, thatās where they get Jolly Old Saint Nicholas.
LORI
Yeahā¦ and if you say Santa Claus a whole bunch of times really fast, it will start sounding like Saint Nicholas.
EMMA
Wellā¦no one has convinced me yet. The story of Jesus in the manger and all that is only a small part of Christmas. There is a lot more that isnāt about that at all. I bet most people donāt even think about āthe baby in the manger thingā at Christmas time.
BECCA
Ohā¦youāre right there. Plus there are all the other countries in the world where they follow other religions and donāt believe in Christ, so if they celebrate Christmas at all, it isnāt about Jesus. Probably more people in the world believe in Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas or Father Christmasā¦ than Jesus Christ.
EMMA
Right. So you admit it. The story of Jesus at Christmas time isnāt very popular.
BECCA
Not being popular doesnāt make it any less real.
