The Christmas Gift

The first three are monologues involving a boy who gave up his donkey, a shepherd and the Innkeeper, each mentioning the special gift. Then the 4th one is Mary and Joseph discussing their new son, The Messiah, and the last two are monologues from the narrator, who is Joanna from the Easter Story. She tells her story about the resurrection, and a final strong evangelical message inviting folks to receive the “gift” being offered to them.

Excerpt:

YOUNG BOY: Hello. Let me tell you my story. I was walking through
Nazareth with my best friend… Oh, he is a donkey. We go everywhere
together. We had just been to the market, so I could get some things
for my mother. That was when I saw Joseph. I know him. He is a
carpenter in Nazareth, and he and Mary were about to have a baby. He
wanted to see if I would allow him to take my donkey on a long
journey. I didn’t really like the idea of my best friend traveling
so far away, but when I knew that Mary would be riding him, I felt
that I just couldn’t say no. I mean, what was Joseph to do? He had
to go because of the census, and he had to take Mary with him. I
guess I appeared like I didn’t want to give up my trusted friend, so
he began to tell me that I would be doing a great service for God.
I didn’t understand how that could be, unless he was just talking
about my doing a good deed. Then he told me that the baby that Mary
was carrying was a very special baby, and that some day I would
probably know all about Him. I asked him how he knew it was going to
be a boy, and he told me that an angel from God told him in a dream.
Then he said that the angel told Mary too, but she wasn’t dreaming
at the time. Now, Joseph is a good man, and not one to make up
stories, so I had no choice but to believe him. I said he could take
my donkey. I could tell he was very pleased. He said God would
bless me. Anyway, I went home and told my parents what happened, and
they said I did a good thing and they were proud of me. I guess we
didn’t really need a donkey all that much. I told my parents about
the special child and the angel from God, and I asked my father if
he thought this could be the Messiah who he was always talking about
who would come some day. He said he didn’t think that the Messiah
was going to be a baby. And he said that the prophesies did not say
that the Messiah would come out of Galilee.
Well, I really miss my friend. I don’t know if I will ever see him
again. But you know, if this baby really is the Messiah, I’m really
glad that my donkey is the one who got to carry Him. Who knows,
maybe someday I will get to know Him.

JOANNA: Let us travel on now to the field. (leading out to the
field) I want to tell you about this special baby that you have heard
about. His birth was not simply going to impact Jerusalem, or this
particular area of Israel, but was to send shockwaves through the
entire world for all of eternity. And unbeknownst to this sleepy
little down of Bethlehem, the angelic host was proclaiming in the
sheep fields that the Messiah is born. I’ll let Nathaniel tell you
all about it.

SHEPHERD: What I am about to tell you is a story that is so hard to
believe that I would not have believed it myself, if I didn’t see
it with my very own eyes. You will think I’m crazy when you hear
all about it. It was a quiet night and we were out here watching
the sheep, as we always do….when suddenly, there was this big man
standing right before us looking very bright! His clothes were
dazzling white and he was like, glowing! I knew right away that
this was no ordinary human being. There was such a brightness all
around… it was so marvelous. I don’t know how to express it to you,
accept to say that it must have been the glory of the Lord! Now,
I have never seen the glory of the Lord before, but I’m sure that
it must be like that! Let me tell you, we were scared! I’ve never
been so scared in all my life! It made it hard to enjoy what was
happening since we didn’t know what was happening. Personally, I
thought I was about to become a dead man.
