At a crucial moment when they are demanding that he get them to safety, he hollers, “Every man for himself!” This teaches a lesson about being prepared, not being prideful, and about where you put your trust.
Two males and two females. About 6-7 mins.
Excerpt:
MAC
Are you excited?
PHYLLIS
I am. I’ve never been sailing before. I must admit that I’m a little nervous.
MAC
Well, there’s nothing to be nervous about. Sailing is very simple.
PHYLLIS
I love your boat…it’s beautiful!
NITA
Oh…that’s not his boat. Mac doesn’t have a boat.
PHYLLIS
It’s not your boat?
STEVE
I was under the impression that we were going out on your boat, Mac.
MAC
It belongs to Joe, a friend of mine. But he’s cool with me borrowing it. It’s practically mine, when you consider how much I’ve used it.
PHYLLIS
So…you’ve been on this particular boat before…
MAC
Oh sure! Lots of times! I’ve been sailing for years! Everybody get in! Steve… why don’t you untie it and push us off?
STEVE
Really? I hope I don’t fall in. (He pantomimes untying the rope and pushing off as he jumps into the boat after everyone else has gotten in) It looks a little cloudy today. Do you think it’s the best weather for sailing?
PHYLLIS
It’s a little breezy, too.
MAC
Its perfect weather for sailing! You want a nice breeze… that makes the boat move along at a nice pace.
PHYLLIS
Well, I’m glad you guys are experienced at this. It makes me feel a little better. I wouldn’t want to go out on the water in a boat with someone who didn’t know what he was doing. How often to do you sail, Nita?
NITA
Don’t look at me! I’ve never been sailing with him before, either. He goes all the time, but this is the first time he has taken me along. I told him to ask Joe to take us, but he insisted that he could handle it.
MAC
There’s nothing to worry about. This is going to be great! I’ve done this so many times!
PHYLLIS
Are there life jackets? That might be important to know.
MAC
I think they’re probably under the seats. You can check if you want. But we won’t need them.
PHYLLIS
I’m glad you’re confident in your sailing abilities. That eases my mind a lot.
NITA
Pass some of that confidence over here, Phyllis…I could use a little.
STEVE
That’s funny, Nita. You know Mac better than we do…so it would almost seem like you don’t trust him. But like you said… he goes sailing all the time.
MAC
I know this boat like the back of my hand.
STEVE
Hey Mac…I always forget which is starboard and which is port.
MAC
Oh…I don’t worry about that stuff. I just say front and back of the boat.
STEVE
Don’t you mean right and left sides of the boat?
MAC
Yeah…that too. Whatever. It’s not important.
STEVE
I’m not a sailor or anything…but it seems like that’s rather basic stuff, isn’t it?
PHYLLIS
How fast are we going?
MAC
I don’t know. But it’s great, isn’t it?
PHYLLIS
Doesn’t this thing have a speedometer? It seems a little fast.
MAC
We have a good breeze. It’s great sailing weather!
NITA
I don’t call that a breeze… I call it a wind! And those clouds don’t look very inviting! You did check the weather report before we left didn’t you, Mac?
MAC
What do you need a weather report for? You can just look and see what kind of a day it is!
