PART 1 (I AM THE TRUE VINE)

SCENE ONE: THE KIDS ARE SEATED ON THE GROUND AND FACING FRANCINE AND KEITH. There is a backdrop of an Italian Vineyard. Hopefully not seen till scene two. At least, the actors don’t notice it till then. You may have to suspend belief and use your imagination when they come back, that they no longer can see the backdrop.

LIGHTS UP

KEITH Okay, kids. Today we are going to learn about several things that Jesus said about himself. Are you ready, Francine?

FRANCINE I am, Keith! Can anyone think of anything that Jesus said about himself?

DIANA He said He was the Son of God

EVAN And the Son of Man

FRANCINE Good Diana and Evan. Anything else?

AIDEN He said that He was going to die and come back to life 3 days later.

FRANCINE Good Aiden. Anything else?

BRIANA He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.”

KEITH Good one, Briana. Notice how that one started? I AM. He actually said those two words a few times with different things following. Can anyone think of any others?

EVAN I am the Good Shepherd

KEITH Alright. Good.

DIANA I am the Bread of Life

KEITH Also good.

AIDEN I am the vine, you are the branches.

BRIANA I am the door.

EVAN I am the light of the world.

CONNOR I am what I am?

DIANA I think that’s Popeye.

CONNOR Popeye??

DIANA I yam what I yam and dats all I yam, I’m Popeye the Sailor Man.

KEITH Connor, I believe you were thinking “I am THAT I am” or WHO I am. But was that actually Jesus who said that? When was that said?

EVAN God spoke that at the burning bush to Moses when he asked who he was.

KEITH That’s right Evan. So we just want to focus on the “I ams” that Jesus said about himself.

Aiden gets up and slowly walks downstage facing the audience in a dreamlike way

AIDEN For some reason, I am really focused on “I am the vine and you are the branches.”

LIGHTS OUT

SCENE TWO: A VINEYARD IN ITALY

LIGHTS UP

Keith and Francine are lying on the ground asleep. The kids get up and look around, confused and amazed.

BRIANA What just happened?

AIDEN I was just thinking about the vine and the branches… and then suddenly… this happened.

DIANA Where are we?

CONNOR (Pointing upstage) Look! We’re in an orchard!

EVAN It’s a vineyard, Connor.

CONNOR A vineyard!!

DIANA And not just any vineyard. I think we are in Italy.

AIDEN But how did we get to Italy?

BRIANA Look! Something happened to Keith and Francine!

Diana checks them

DIANA They are sleeping.

CONNOR Sleeping? They are missing everything! Wake them up!

DIANA Not sure I should.

BRIANA This is very strange.

AIDEN Why do you suppose we are here?

EVAN Perhaps you brought us here, Aiden when you were thinking about that verse. Jesus said, “I am the vine and you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

CONNOR What kind of fruit grows in a vineyard?

DIANA Usually grapes.

CONNOR I love grapes!! So it’s like a grape orchard!

BRIANA I guess you can say that. But it’s called a vineyard. They grow on vines. Thus… VINE-YARD.

CONNOR So do they make grape jelly and grape soda here?

DIANA Not sure they even use real grapes for grape soda…but I would say that this place probably makes wine, mostly.

CONNOR Wine! I’m not allowed to drink that.

AIDEN None of us are, Connor. We are not adults, yet.

CONNOR Keith and Francine are older. Do you think they drink wine? Hey! Maybe that is why they are sleeping! They drank too much wine!

EVAN I think we are here to learn something about vineyards. And maybe wine. Do you know of any times in the Bible when they talked about wine and vineyards?

BRIANA If you drink too much wine you can get drunk, and that’s not good. I think that is in the Bible somewhere.

EVAN Proverbs.

DIANA Jesus turned water into wine at that wedding.

AIDEN That’s right. And they drank wine at the last supper.

EVAN It represented His blood that He was about to shed on the cross.

DIANA Wasn’t there a story about a vineyard in the old testament?

EVAN There was a king who wanted this man’s vineyard and the man would not sell it to him, so the king’s wife had the man killed so the king could have it.

CONNOR That’s terrible!

BRIANA There was another story, one that Jesus told. A parable I guess, about owners of a vineyard and they went away and their workers were wicked and took over the vineyard.

AIDEN I think we need to focus on the verse that Evan quoted.

EVAN There is another one from John: “I am the true vine and my father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

CONNOR What’s a vinedresser?

DIANA Obviously, the man who works in the vineyard, taking care of the vines and the grapes.

CONNOR And the prunes.

BRIANA What?

CONNOR Evan said something about prunes. He never mentioned grapes.

DIANA No, Evan. Pruning is something you do to the vines. You cut them back. That is called pruning. It makes the vines grow bigger and stronger… and you get better grapes.

CONNOR Oh.

EVAN So, let’s think about Jesus as the true vine. God, the Father comes and prunes back the branches so that they can bear more fruit.

AIDEN And we are the branches. So, God prunes us, so that we can bear more fruit.

CONNOR So what kind of fruit am I growing? I like cherries.

to be continued…
