Children Of Bethlehem

$30.00

This was done as a Children’s Musical, but there was only one original song. The rest of the songs were borrowed from other places. It does work well as a musical with costumes.  The original song is included.

Joey is in the Children’s Choir and he falls asleep after the performance and dreams that he is back in the time of Jesus’ birth as one of the children of Bethlehem. Jonas and Deborah live in the Inn that is run by their parents. Mary and Joseph come by asking for a room…and get sent to the stable. The kids are all excited about a baby being born in their stable that night. Micah is a shepherd boy who wants to be able to stay up all night with his older brother and the other shepherds to watch the sheep.. so he hides out after he and the other children were sent home. Jedidiah is his brother, who loves to study the scriptures..and knows a lot about the prophesies concerning the Messiah. The angel appears to them and they immediately believe that this baby is the one they have been waiting for. They hurry to see the baby and worship him telling Joseph and Mary about the angels. As they leave, they see Jonas and Deborah and tell them, too. They tell their dad, who doesn’t believe them that the baby is the Messiah, and sends them off to bed. Joey is wakened by his mother, and he tells her about his dream. He decides to give his heart to Jesus.

Cast of 22 (12 male, 10 female, some adults can be used), plus extras and Children’s Choir. Depending on how many songs are used, time is 60-90 mins. Dramatic portion is about 25-30 mins. This can also be used as a short non-musical play.

Excerpt:

Jonas: (watching in the distance ..now comes to the door) Deborah! Come
here! That woman that Father turned away, she is going to have a baby!
Look out the door! Father is taking them to the stable!

Deborah: To the stable?? That is not a good place to sleep!

Jonas: Especially since she is going to have the baby tonight!

Deborah: Tonight? How do you know that?

Jonas: Because I heard the man tell Father that the baby is coming tonight.

Deborah: I would gladly give her my place on the floor tonight, but I’m
afraid it would not be a very comfortable place to have a baby.

Jonas: Actually, a bed of hay in the stable would be much preferred. I
hope they will be okay.

Deborah: Jonas! We should get up early in the morning and go and see the
new baby!

Jonas: Do you think that would be alright?

Deborah: Sure. After all, we are the Innkeeper’s children, we can ask
them if there is anything that they need.

Jonas: But they are not paying guests.

Deborah: Jonas! They are staying in our stable… and what kind of people
would we be if we did not help them?

Innkeeper’s wife: Help who? What are you two talking about?

Jonas: We were talking about the woman who is having a baby tonight?

Innkeeper’s wife: What woman? What baby?

Deborah: Father turned them away because we don’t have any room… so they
are sleeping in the stable. And the woman might have her baby tonight…in
our stable!

Innkeeper’s wife: Having a baby in our stable!? Oh my! It must be a
terrible mess back there!

Jonas: Its not that bad. I just cleaned it out real good the other day.

Innkeeper’s wife: But the animals… the hay…. its just not the place
to have a baby.

Deborah: But Mother, it would be better than sleeping on the floor in here!

Innkeeper’s wife: I suppose that’s true. And much quieter, too.

Deborah: Mother, we want to help. Can we?
Innkeeper’s wife: Help? What could you do?

Jonas: Oh… she just wants to see the baby.

Deborah: I want to help, too. Its not every day that a baby is born here.

Innkeeper’s wife: I think thats nice that you want to help. I will
certainly check on them and see if there is anything that they need. Oh.. I
just wish that we had a room available for them! If only we weren’t having
this awful census! There are just too many people!

Jonas: Father says that all this extra business is good for us. He says we
needed it.

Innkeeper’s wife: Well thats true… and we have to accept the bad with
the good. Everyone has to register and be counted.. and so we make a little
extra money. But its not worth it! Those Romans just want to tax us to
death! Its just not right! That poor woman probably had to travel a long
way in her delicate condition. And then after the baby comes, she will not
be able to travel back home for some time. Oh.. the poor things.

Deborah: Mother, why are the Romans so mean to the Jews?

Innkeeper’s wife: Oh, Deborah… it has been going on for so many years..
Gentiles have never liked the Jews.

Jonas: But I thought we were The Chosen People.

Innkeeper’s wife: We are. And thats why we are so persecuted. The
Gentiles do not love Jehovah. They would have killed us all many years ago,
if it were not for His protecting hand upon us. That is why we must worship
Him and Him only.

Deborah: Like it says in the Commandments.

Innkeeper’s wife: That’s right. And we must keep praying everyday… for
all our needs..and for the Messiah to come! He will deliver us from the
Romans.

Deborah: What will it be like when the Messiah comes?

Innkeeper’s wife: He will be a great king and He will rule with a strong
hand.. and with righteousness.

Jonas: Sometimes at temple, they read the prophecies about the Messiah,
from the scriptures. Father says that the prophet Micah wrote about the
Messiah..and said that He will come from right here in Bethlehem…and He
will rule over Israel.

Deborah: Who is He? Do we know his name?

Innkeeper’s wife: The prophet Isaiah gave us some names… One is
Immanuel. It means ‘God is with us’. Isaiah also said that He will be born
of a virgin…

Deborah: What does that mean….born of a virgin?

Innkeeper’s wife: It means that he will have a mother but not a father.
That could only mean that Jehovah is His father… so He will be the Son of
God.

Deborah: I hope I get to meet him.

Innkeeper’s wife: Me too.. now off to bed.. both of you.

Deborah: I couldn’t possibly sleep tonight. The floor is so hard and
cold..and there is a baby being born in our stable! I wonder if it will be
a boy or a girl..
