Excerpt:
The girls are still sitting at the bus stop. Becky is on her cell texting and Julie is looking around at the town.
JULIE
Why don’t you just call them?
BECKY
I told Mom that I would call when Grandma picked us up. But just in case she is starting to worry… I thought I would text her.
JULIE
Becky… what does your grandma look like?
BECKY
Look like? What do you mean?
JULIE
There is a lady coming this way… I was just wondering…
BECKY
(Looking) That’s her!
She jumps up and runs to greet her. They hug.
BECKY
Grandma!
REBECCA
There’s my girl!! I hope you haven’t been waiting long!
BECKY
Not too long… the bus was early.
REBECCA
Well, you should have called me! You have a cell phone, I bet.
BECKY
You were probably already on your way.
REBECCA
Well.. I’m excited! Are you?
BECKY
Yes!
REBECCA
So… introduce your friend!
BECKY
Oh yeah! Grandma, this is my best friend, Julie. This is my grandma, Rebecca!
JULIE
Nice to meet you.
REBECCA
Come here, I want to give you a hug, too! (They hug)
JULIE
I didn’t realize that you two have the same name. She always just says Grandma.
REBECCA
Yes! Becky is my namesake! Isn’t that wonderful? It was such a blessing when she came to us and then I heard that she had the same name as me, and well… I was just overjoyed and very honored.
JULIE
So, should I call you Rebecca, or Mrs….
REBECCA
Why don’t you just call me Grandma and I’ll adopt you as another granddaughter? Or perhaps Grandma Becca… that’s pretty easy.
JULIE
Okay. I guess I can do that.
REBECCA
Well, I want to hear all about your bus trip! Is this all the luggage you have?
BECKY
Yes… this is it.
REBECCA
Well, I apologize for leaving you waiting here alone. I hope you weren’t scared or anything. Your parents would never forgive me.
BECKY
Oh no! We weren’t scared. What’s to be scared of?
REBECCA
Well… I know… this is a very safe town. But with you not knowing anyone…
BECKY
We know each other.
JULIE
We were just looking at the decorations that the town has put up and talking about getting to celebrate an early Christmas this year.
REBECCA
An early Christmas?
JULIE
Yes… this is going to feel like Christmas! Becky said that you always do a lot of fun Christmas stuff.
REBECCA
Well, yes, I guess we do.
JULIE
At home… we get so busy that we don’t seem to focus on Christmas till the last minute.
BECKY
That’s why I love coming here… because we always do such fun things and it makes it feel like we get an early Christmas.
JULIE
Becky told me about some of the things you have done in the past and it all sounds really cool! I’m excited.
REBECCA
Wonderful! Oh, Becky, honey… do you need to call home?
BECKY
Oh yeah! I said I would wait till you picked us up.
REBECCA
Maybe you should call before we get moving. Your cell might go in and out in the car.
Becky pulls out her phone and calls… she walks away a bit
BECKY
Mom?
She talks quietly as Julie and Rebecca continue
REBECCA
So, Julie… how long have you known Becky?
JULIE
I don’t know. A long time. Let’s see… we moved there three years ago… and Becky was the first person at school who was nice to me.
REBECCA
Oh, that’s wonderful! She’s such a sweetheart! And did you two become bosom buddies right from the start?
JULIE
Become what?
REBECCA
Oh, I’m sorry… that’s a really old expression and a rather silly one. You know, I think I remember Becky talking about you last year when she came. Maybe the year before, too. Well, I know we talked about you last year, because I said that she should invite you to come this year! And here you are! I’m so glad to get to meet you.
JULIE
Me too. I’ve heard a lot about you. I know Becky loves coming here.
REBECCA
Well, I expect that she told you that I sing all the time.
JULIE
Oh… I think she might have mentioned it.
REBECCA
Well, I just hope you don’t find it bothersome. I really can’t help myself. Jesus puts a song in my heart. And especially this time of year… I just love the carols! It really puts me in the Christmas spirit.
JULIE
I think that’s cool. I need some Christmas spirit.
REBECCA
Oh, I bet you have lots!
JULIE
Not really. My family doesn’t do spirit so much. I mean… just a few minutes ago, we were talking about Jesus coming to earth as a baby. I know that it’s what Christmas really means… but I don’t really think about that too much. I probably should.
REBECCA
Yes! You should! I love that part of Christmas! It’s the most important part. You know what I was thinking about this morning?
JULIE
What?
REBECCA
I was thinking about what it was like in heaven when Jesus was born.
