Once More, With Feeling

$25.00

It’s time for the Christmas program, but the children leaders are too busy to do it. Since the young people did it a few years back, they invite the same bunch in and ask them to help the younger kids put on the Christmas story. So, with teens in charge, they run into a few problems trying to get the kids to accept their roles and also remembering how the story goes and where to find it all in the Bible. Leadership gets passed around as someone has to go look for a missing kid in the church. It all turns out well at the end with a nice narrated Christmas story.

Excerpt:

SCENE ONE:
Action begins as the lights come up that there are a lot of kids around nativity props and costumes in big boxes or containers. Some of the teens are just standing or sitting around talking and not paying attention. The younger children are playing around the props… getting into the costumes and trying them on… making a lot of noise in the process and perhaps one of the teens trying to calm them down.

GRACIE
Come on you kids! Knock it of!
The kids pretty much ignore her. Two adult women enter: Beverly and Annemarie.
BEVERLY
Okay everybody! Gather around and pay attention! Put the costumes away and come on over here.
CHAZ
What are we doing, Miss Beverly?
BEVERLY
Just be patient. I’m about to tell you.
ISAIAH
It looks like we’re going to put on a Christmas play! I want to be a shepherd!
KYLE
I want to be a king!
JULIANNA
I want to be Mary!
HANNAH
I want to be Mary!
EVAN
Darla will probably be Mary. She’s always Mary when we do stuff like this.
DARLA
Why are we in here with the little kids?
BEVERLY
Because the little kids are doing the play this year.
DARLA
Well, that explains why THEY are here… but why are WE here?
BEVERLY
Well… you guys have all done this before.
CHAZ
Yeah! This is the exact cast from when we did it last time! Man that was a long time ago!
EVAN
You want us to show them how it’s done?
ANNEMARIE
Something like that. We want you to help them put it together.
GRACIE
You mean, like …help you? We’re like your assistants?
ANNEMARIE
In a way.
BEVERLY
Actually, you will be in charge.
GRACIE
Who?
BEVERLY
You.
GRACIE
Me?
CHAZ
You’re putting Gracie in charge?
FIONA
So what are you two going to do?
BEVERLY
We are so busy this year, that we don’t really have time to do this. We thought it would be cute to have the little ones put on the play, and since you guys have been through this and know the story and how it’s done… we felt that we could put you in charge of helping the little ones put it together.
ANNEMARIE
Yeah… so good luck and break a leg and all that!
CHAZ
That’s it? You’re just going to leave us?
BEVERLY
You’ll do fine. Gracie… you have our cell phone numbers if you need to reach us.
ANNEMARIE
And the mothers are just down the hall in the library. Have fun!
BEVERLY
Don’t look so worried…. you will do fine!
DARLA
Do we look worried?
BEVERLY
Well, Fiona has that “deer in the headlights” look to her. Well… we’re going to leave you to it. Gracie… don’t forget to start with prayer… you’re gonna need it. Bye.
The two ladies exit.
EVAN
So, why did they put you in charge, Gracie?
CHAZ
That’s obvious. She’s the best one for the job. She’ll actually get the kids to listen to her.
ISAIAH
I want to be a shepherd!
KYLE
I want to be a king!
JULIANNA
I want to be Mary!
HANNAH
I want to be Mary!
GRACIE
Okay, kids. If this is going to work and we are going to put on a good play for the church… I need your cooperation. You have to listen to us and follow our instructions and be on your best behavior!
KIDS
Okay.
GRACIE
Let’s start with some prayer. Miss Beverly was right. We are going to need it. Let’s all bow our heads. Dear Jesus… please help us all to do our best. Help us to listen and try to be good and try hard to put on a good play. Help me to be a good director and may we work together as a team and put on a really good play. We want to tell the story of your birth and bless everyone and especially touch the hearts of those who may not know you. Thank you for all your help, in Jesus name I pray… Amen.
KIDS
Amen.
GRACIE
Okay… well, I guess the place to start is who plays which part… and before you start yelling out stuff… let me just say… there will be no complaining… no tears…. no attitudes. Right? You will accept the part you are given and give it your best!
EVAN
Wow, Gracie! You rule! Miss Beverly knew what she was doing when she put you in charge!
GRACIE
Well, thanks for your vote of confidence, Evan.
CHAZ
So… how do we do this?
GRACIE
I don’t have a clue.
DARLA
What? But Miss Beverly just put you in charge!
GRACIE
That doesn’t mean that I know what I’m doing!
EVAN
I take back what I just said. You don’t rule after all.
