MATTHEW’S TESTIMONY
WRITTEN BY WARREN SAGER
MATTHEW: I was a tax collector. We were not very popular among the people. It was our job to make sure that everyone paid their taxes. Sometimes the tax collectors kept some of the money for themselves… you know, like cheating. I was no different from the rest. But one day I looked up from my table and there stood this tall man… there was definitely something special about Him. He looked at me and said, “Matthew, follow me.” So I invited Him to my place for dinner with my friends… and there were a lot of comments about Him eating and drinking with sinners. But He loved us, and in turn, we loved Him. I was very honored and overjoyed to be appointed one of the twelve. I learned much from Jesus’ teaching and he taught so often in parables. And there were so many miracles: I remember one time there were 5,000 men gathered on a hillside to hear Him, plus women and children, and it got late. Jesus told us to feed them. We had only 5 loaves and 2 fish, and Jesus took that and blessed it and we fed them all, with 12 baskets of broken pieces left over. That same night, he came to us out in the middle of the sea, walking on the water. There were many other miracles including countless healings and casting out of demons. We saw Him calm a storm on the sea with just a word, and he raised His friend Lazarus from the dead after he had been in the tomb several days. But I will never forget that night. We were all gathered for the Passover meal, and Jesus took bread and wine and blessed it and said it represented his body and blood. He told us that one of us would betray Him, but we did not suspect Judas for a minute. He shared from His heart that night, and as we walked to the garden, He was so deeply grieved. He asked us to pray with Him, but no one could stay awake. He seemed to be greatly burdened, but there was nothing that any of us could do. When the crowd arrived to arrest Him, we all ran. He was beaten and mocked and forced to carry His cross and they crucified Him. Most of us remained in the distance, but we could see Him hanging there. It seemed so important to us that we look. There He was, Jesus, the Lamb of God.
