LET HIM WHO IS WITHOUT SIN

CAST OF CHARACTERS
ADULTEROUS WOMAN: Speaks 316 words.
PHARISEE 1: Speaks 130 words.
SCRIBE: Speaks 124 words.
JESUS: Speaks 91 words.
PHARISEE 2: Speaks 47 words.
A MAN AND TWO WOMEN FROM THE CROWD plus extra crowd people and disciples.

SCENE BEGINS:
Jesus and his disciples are gathered at one side of the stage talking in mime and cannot be heard but only seen. Jesus may be seated with his followers seated on the ground around him. Meanwhile, across the stage, a group of men and crowd people enter with a woman who they are forcing to come with them. The men are scribes and pharisees and the woman is fighting them and screaming. Several of the men are carrying stones with them.
MAN IN CROWD
Stone her!
2ND WOMAN FROM THE CROWD
What is happening? What has she done?
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
Let me go! You have no right!
PHARISEE 1
Silence woman! You know you are guilty! We caught you in the act of adultery! You cannot deny it!
WOMAN FROM THE CROWD
She is an adulteress!
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
You hypocrites! You don’t care about me! You are using me for your own agenda!
PHARISEE 1
What?!! And what would that be? You tell us!
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
I couldn’t possibly know that. But you have your reasons, and it has nothing to do with doing what is right.
SCRIBE
You can’t speak about what is right and wrong! Do you deny that you were caught in adultery? The very act! How can you say it isn’t true?
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
I didn’t say that! I don’t deny anything! But where is the man? Why do you bring only me?? I am not the only one guilty!
WOMAN FROM THE CROWD
I know the man she speaks of! He is the husband of my neighbor! I have seen them together!
2ND WOMAN FROM THE CROWD
Yes! I know of this, too! It is bad enough that she is that kind of woman… but with a married man! She is trying to destroy a home and a family!
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
You women are gossips and busybodies! How dare you accuse me!
WOMAN FROM THE CROWD
You seduced him!
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
Did you ever think that perhaps he was the one who seduced me?! He followed me in the streets. He told me that he could not stop thinking about me and he said he loved me! I didn’t know he was married.
(She stops and begins to feel contrite)
I know that does not excuse my sin…
WOMAN FROM THE CROWD
You’re a harlot!
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
I’m not!
2ND WOMAN FROM THE CROWD
Home destroyer!
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
I don’t know why it happened! How can I explain it? Two people are drawn together. Two lonely people who just want to find someone to love.
PHARISEE 2
Why would this man seek you out? He has a wife at home!
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
Maybe you should ask him! He is not unlike many men. They want what they don’t have!
MAN IN CROWD
See? She has had many men!
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
I didn’t say that!
PHARISEE 2
You used your powers of seduction on him. You made him believe he wanted you.
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
You will believe what you want to believe! It does not matter what I say. I know I will not get a trial, here. That’s not part of your agenda! You people never cared about the laws before! I can’t believe that you do now.
PHARISEE 2
Silence! You will not speak in your defense!
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
How could I possibly defend myself? I’m guilty and there is no mercy!
MAN IN CROWD
We should stone her!
WOMAN FROM THE CROWD
Yes! Stone her!
PHARISEE 1
In time! Wait for our decision.
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
What are you going to do with me? I see the stones in your hands! If you’re going to stone me… then do it and get it over with!
SCRIBE
It is what our law demands! We are right to do so!
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
Yes… and I will be killed for my sin! And will that serve your purpose? Will you all be happy then?
The men are not comfortable with her comments. The scribe looks over at Jesus and begins to put on an act as if this was not their plan all along. He comes across very phony, but is pretending to be sincere.
SCRIBE
Let’s hear what this teacher, Jesus has to say about her! He is known to be a friend of sinners, but how can he deny the law?
(Aside to the Pharisees)
We will force him to give an answer.
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
(She sees Jesus and knows of Him)
Not the teacher!
She turns her face and doesn’t want to look at Jesus or for Him to see her.
MAN IN CROWD
I hear that He eats and drinks with tax-collectors and other sinners…even harlots! And He tells them that they are forgiven!
SCRIBE
He likes to forgive people their sins, but how can he go against the Law of Moses?
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
Why are you bringing Him into this??
PHARISEE 2
Be quiet, woman!
PHARISEE 1
If he says, “stone her” then the people will no longer love him. They will think he is cold and merciless. If he forgives her and lets her go, we can accuse him of breaking the Law of Moses! I’m sure he will do the latter.
PHARISEE 2
We will then have grounds for our accusation.
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
So that’s it! It isn’t about me at all! It’s about HIM!! You hypocrites!
PHARISEE 1
Silence!
SCRIBE
We shall throw her down at his feet! Then we shall ask his opinion.
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
NO!!
JESUS
(Speaking to his disciples is finally heard)
If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Jesus stops abruptly and they notice the commotion. The noise builds as they begin to shout as they drag her to Jesus. The men take her and throw her down on the ground near Jesus. This of course draws the attention of the entire crowd, those with Jesus and those who were following the action with the woman. If Jesus was seated while teaching, he now stands as the woman falls at his feet. Suddenly everyone gets quiet and they look at Jesus to see what He is going to do. She is distraught and begins to weep in His presence. Everyone is watching with great interest to see what He will do. After a quiet pause, the Pharisee finally speaks:
PHARISEE 1
Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. Now…in the law, Moses commanded us that such women shall be stoned to death; but what then do you say that we should do with her? What would be your sentence?
Jesus stoops down, begins to write on the ground with His finger. They are confused at first of this action and they begin to become frustrated that He has not answered them. After a pause, he asks again.
PHARISEE 1
What do you say, Teacher?
SCRIBE
Yes…what is your answer? Do you think she should be stoned…
(Continues slowly)
…as it states in the law?
They all look at the ground, wondering what He has written. Jesus rises back up.
JESUS
Let him who is without sin among you, be the first to throw a stone at her.
He stoops back down and writes on the ground again. The accusers begin to see what has been written and act very uncomfortable about what He has said and has written. They begin to walk away, beginning with the oldest first. Once they have all exited, Jesus straightens back up.
JESUS
Woman, where are your accusers? Has no man condemned you?
ADULTEROUS WOMAN
(Still looking down)
No one, Lord.
JESUS
Neither do I condemn you; go your way. From now on sin no more.
She slowly looks up at Him and He is looking right at her and into her eyes. Through her tears she starts to slowly rise to her feet, possibly unaware that He is holding her hand and raising her up. She cannot take her eyes off of Him and He smiles at her. She begins to slowly move away and finally turns to walk away, but then looks back again. At this Jesus turns back to the ones still there and begins to teach them again. She stops and listens from a small distance.
JESUS
I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.
LIGHTS FADE.
