Mr. Finch, The Grinch

$25.00

This short Christian Christmas play is easy to do.  A bunch of kids with just a few lines each.  The character of Mr. Finch will have the most lines.  Mixture of adults with kids.

Things have changed for this year’s Christmas play when the church decides to hire a professional director.  Mr. Finch is a Scrooge type character who is all business and very professional, leaving behind the goodness and kindness needed in a church surrounding.  The long opening scene is the auditions and each kid comes forward to do their try out and many are ridiculed by the director.  The play wraps up quickly in the following scenes as we have the adults and children discussing what it is like working with Mr. Finch, and then the finale of him sharing how they and God have changed his heart… and he is a changed man.

Cast of 20.  15 children (6 girls, 9 boys) 5 adults (2 males, 3 females)  Some genders can be changed.  35-40 mins.

EXCERPT FROM SCRIPT:

DOLORES Nikki Flatts.

Nikki comes up bursting with confidence.

EBENEZER You also want to audition for the narrator?

NIKKI Yes! And I can tell the story in my own words!

EBENEZER Very well… go for it.

NIKKI Well, it all began a long, long time ago… thousands of years ago!

EBENEZER Two.

NIKKI What?

EBENEZER Two thousand years ago.

NIKKI Okay. Right. And Joseph and Mary had to make this long trip from Nazareth to Jerusalem right when she was having a baby!

EBENEZER I believe it was Bethlehem.

NIKKI Okay. So… they took off on the trip and they ran into some kings from the orient lands… like China and Japan and the Philippines. And these kings were trying to find the baby… but Mary and Joseph didn’t know where they could find the baby, well, because the baby wasn’t born yet… so they told them to go see the priest. No, wait… to see the king. No, they were kings… oh! The Pharaoh…. right. But the Pharaoh hardened his heart and said “Let my people go!” So.. Moses…

EBENEZER Moses?!?

NIKKI No, wait. I got confused.

EBENEZER Ya think?

NIKKI No.. The shepherds… right. The shepherds came out to feed their sheep and suddenly there was this angel… Michael. He was an ark angel, which means he was on the ark with Noah.

At this point Ebenezer is just amazed at what she is saying.

NIKKI And he told the shepherds that they were too afraid. So, they all fainted and all the sheep got scared and ran away. But they woke up and went into town looking for a place to spend the night. But there was no room for them. All the hotels were booked solid. So, they hid out in a barn and then they saw Joseph and Mary in the street and they said, “Come in here, and we will give you rest.” So, they came in and Mary had her baby and he was asleep on the hay. And Jesus’ head was glowing like a light bulb and that made the barn so bright that the three kings found them and they came with gifts. They brought money… you know, gold and silver, and perfume, but in those days they called it toilet water…, no, seriously! … and and..what was the third thing? Starts with an M.

EBENEZER Myrrh?

NIKKI No… Oh MILK! For the baby! Of course! And they all worshiped the baby and the animals started talking.

EBENEZER I don’t know what you just told me. Please have a seat. Or don’t.. I don’t really care.

Nikki looks confused and a bit hurt, walks away.

DOLORES Oscar Pendleton?

OSCAR Here!

PRESTON I was here before Oscar!

OSCAR Maybe you forgot to sign in.

PRESTON Maybe you wrote your name above mine when you signed in!

OSCAR Well… I should go first.

DOLORES It doesn’t really matter.

PRESTON Go ahead. I didn’t want to go first anyway!

OSCAR Why not?

PRESTON Because that way I can watch your audition and then do mine better.

OSCAR You were here before me… so you really should go first.

EBENEZER Oscar! You’re up! Okay, you are reading for the part of King Herod.

OSCAR Yes sir. Getting his pic taken

EBENEZER Start when you are ready.

OSCAR (Begins to read, with anger and emotion) Why haven’t those men returned to tell me where that baby is?? Someone must have tipped them off!! We have this child living in Bethlehem and nobody knows where!! What if he is dangerous to us? What if he truly is some prophecy fulfilled? He must be found and destroyed! Even if I have to destroy every living male child in that city! Find Him!

EBENEZER Thank you.

OSCAR This isn’t right.

EBENEZER I beg your pardon?

OSCAR Herod didn’t kill every one of the young males, only the ones under the age of two.

EBENEZER And your point?

OSCAR That’s not what the line says.

EBENEZER Did you read the entire script?

OSCAR No sir, just this line.

EBENEZER Then you don’t know what the rest of the lines are, do you?

OSCAR No sir.

EBENEZER Have a seat. Next.

DOLORES Preston Davis. He comes forward and gets his pic taken

EBENEZER Another Herod?

PRESTON Yes sir.

EBENEZER Go ahead.

PRESTON Start?

EBENEZER Or don’t… I don’t really care.

PRESTON (Does not read well, no feeling) Ahem.. Why have those men… returned… to tell me where that baby is?? Some one must have tipped them over!! We have this child living in Beth.. Beth… bethel.. Bethelehee…bethlehem and no body knows where!!

EBENEZER Stop!

PRESTON Don’t you want me to finish?

EBENEZER You already have.

Preston walks away, dejected.
