The way he goes about asking her to marry him is somewhat humorous. Tia lives with the woman who is her spiritual mentor and is like a mother to her, and there is an obvious deep love that the women have for each other and for the Lord.
This has been marked down to a very reasonable cost.
2 actors and 3 actresses. No set. About 17-20 mins.
Excerpt:
CHARLIE: Oh… this sounds so exciting! Don’t you think?
MIRIAM: Oh, yes. Very exciting. But I’m not the one you need to convince. We can stand here all day talking about it, but the one who you really should be talking to is Tia. Have you thought about how you are going to ask her?
CHARLIE: No… I just made the decision to pop the question a few moments ago. I guess I had better think about it for awhile.
MIRIAM: Well, I hope you don’t wait too long because I don’t know how long I can keep my mouth shut. But I will certainly try. Are we heading to lunch again today?
CHARLIE: Oh yes, I thought of a new place to take both of you.
MIRIAM: This is really becoming a regular Sunday afternoon affair. We have sure enjoyed it, but are you sure you don’t want to be alone with Tia today?
CHARLIE: No… that would be like a date! You have to be there!
MIRIAM: Alright. I was just asking. I will go and wait by the car. Tia is coming right now. I’ll see you later.
(She exits) (As he is standing there he suddenly realizes that he doesn’t have a ring to give her… he pulls his off his finger and looks at it… and decides it is too big. He digs in his pocket and looks thru the junk and finds a twisty-tie.)
CHARLIE: Oh! A ring! I need a ring! Rats. I’m so unprepared. Wait…what’s this in my pocket. A twisty tie? That could work.
(He quickly ties it into a ring and holds it in his hand.)
TIA: (entering) Charlie! Have you seen Miriam?
CHARLIE: Yes. She was just here. She is waiting by the car. I’m taking you to a new restaurant.
TIA: That is so kind of you. Thank you very much. I’ve sure enjoyed our Sunday lunches.
CHARLIE: Tia, I wanted to talk to you about something.
TIA: Yes. What is it?
CHARLIE: I know that we have only known each other for a very short time, and I have been enjoying our friendship and getting to know you.
TIA: So have I.
CHARLIE: So, what I wanted to know was … was if… Oh golly, Tia. I just can’t make it sound perfect!
TIA: What? Why does it have to be perfect? Just say what’s on your mind.
CHARLIE: Okay. Would you be my wife? Oh! I forgot to get on one knee! (He drops to his knees and she acts quite shocked) Just a sec. There.. Would you be my wife? No, wait, that is both knees… I think it’s just supposed to be one knee! (Gets on one knee) There. Would you be my wife? Shucks Tia! This isn’t very romantic is it? I should have waited till we got to the restaurant. And I should have said, “Will you marry me”. That sounds so much better than “Would you be my wife”!
TIA: (Shocked and starting to laugh) Charlie, stand up before someone sees you. (He starts to get up… then stops)
CHARLIE: No, I have to wait for your answer! You won’t take a long time to answer will you?
TIA: (laughs) I guess this is really the best setting for this… since this is the very spot where we met.
CHARLIE: It is? Oh yes… of course it is! I planned it that way.
TIA: Oh, Charlie… now is that really the truth?
CHARLIE: Tia, I will tell you what the truth is. The truth is that my life has not been the same since I met you several weeks ago. The truth is that I have been in prayer and I believe that the Lord has brought us together. I know that I love you and I think I loved you from the very first moment I saw you even before knowing your name. More than anything I want to be your husband. And I believe that besides being able to provide and care for you, I think we can and will be very happy together. And that is what the truth is.
TIA: I guess I knew that this day would come eventually. I didn’t expect it so soon. I have told Miriam that I am her family and that I would never leave her. This makes my decision very hard. I know she will be okay, but I am so attached to her. Maybe I’m being silly…
CHARLIE: Miriam? Oh, I already thought of that. We can get a bigger place and she can come and live with us!
TIA: Really?
CHARLIE: Oh sure. We have to keep Miriam in the family.
TIA: Then the answer is yes! I am so happy! That was the only thing holding me back from answering sooner.
CHARLIE: Wow! Really? Yes? You’ll marry me? (She nods) So can I get up now?
TIA: Yes… please do! (She helps him up with one arm)
CHARLIE: I didn’t have time to get a ring for you. I mean, I only decided to ask you a few minutes ago. So I made this from a twisty-tie in my pocket. Here. (He tries putting it on her finger)
TIA: Oh! It is perfect!
