All About Dave

$15.00

Dave has gotten really messed up by dealing drugs. His wife, Sharon is now a Christian and has been sharing with him, so he is feeling convicted and guilty. He decides to tell his dealer bosses that he wants out. In the opening and dramatic scene… violence erupts as a gun comes out and Dave ends up dead. The rest of the play is about Dave’s friends who are shocked and spend time discussing the events and Sharon and this also leads to opportunities to share the gospel.

In another dramatic scene, Sharon has a gun and wants to end her life, when two friends come to her rescue. Bill, one of the dealers in the opening scene, comes to Christ at the end of the play. This can work at Easter as there is a scene where the Last Supper is discussed. This is a very similar story (even sequel, if you will) to several other plays listed here: The Bench, The Bench in the Alley, It Happened in the Alley, and Conversations With Friends. You will find many of the same characters and even some similar situations… yet it is not the same script and the stories are different.11 actors (6 male and 5 female) About 55-60 mins.

Excerpt:

Dave is on stage and seems to be waiting for someone. He is under a bridge in a large city and not in the best area of town. He begins to pace nervously. Tom and Bill enter.
TOM
What’s this all about, Dave? You know this isn’t our regular time!
BILL
Yeah, this better be good. Is it a large order?
DAVE
No, not exactly.
BILL
I mean… we do have a little on us… but you have to prepare us for this sort of thing. This is sloppy, Dave… real sloppy. You gotta do things our way.
DAVE
I don’t need any stuff. It’s not about that. Well…. not exactly anyway…
TOM
You called us out here and you don’t want any stuff? You just want to give us a lot of money, is that it?
BILL
You’re a good dealer, Dave… this isn’t like you. What’s going on?
DAVE
I wanted to talk to you…
TOM
You want to talk? You brought us out here to talk? I’m not in the mood for a little chat, Dave!
DAVE
It’s…. It’s about my dealing.
TOM
What about it?
DAVE
Well… I think I want out.
TOM
What??
DAVE
I don’t want to do this anymore.
TOM
You want out?? You can’t quit, Dave!
DAVE
But I think I need to quit.
BILL
Dave, you are one of our best dealers! What’s going on with you? Are the cops on to you?
DAVE
No. I don’t think so. It’s my wife… Sharon
TOM
I thought you said your wife didn’t know you were doing this.
DAVE
She doesn’t. I don’t think.
BILL
You don’t think? You need to be sure, Dave! You need to be sure about that!
DAVE
If she suspected, she would say something…
TOM
Or just go to the cops!
DAVE
Sharon is not going to turn me in! She would talk to me first. She would try to get me to quit.
BILL
So, you’re going to beat her to it? I don’t get it. If she doesn’t know, then what’s the problem?
TOM
Doesn’t you wife wonder where the extra money is coming from?
DAVE
She thinks I’m getting bonuses at work and when I go out to deliver product… she thinks I’m working overtime.
TOM
Maybe you should just tell her and let her help you… it could be an even bigger operation!
DAVE
She would never do it! She would be upset if she knew I was doing it! She started going to church and she talks about God all the time, now…
TOM
Oh no! She’s religious?? Those are the worst!
DAVE
Yeah… so you see… I need to get out of this racket. She can’t find out about it.
BILL
Well, she hasn’t found out up till now. Why do you think she will? Those Bible pushers are usually pretty blind to this sort of thing. If you’ve kept her in the dark till now…
DAVE
That’s just it. I’m starting to feel like this is not the right kind of work for me. I mean, it’s illegal and dangerous and really… it’s morally wrong. I’m selling drugs to people and they’re messing up their lives!
TOM
Oh no! He’s getting sucked in! So, you’re going to church, too?
DAVE
No. I haven’t gone with her yet.
TOM
Yet.
DAVE
But we’ve talked about it. She has God in her life now and she feels like He has saved her from all her sins. She talks about how Jesus died on the cross for her sins…
TOM
Oh, the Jesus people… they’re the worst of them! You gotta forget this nonsense right now, Dave!
DAVE
But, it’s starting to make a lot of sense to me, guys. I’ve done a lot of bad things. And this is the worst of the worst! I’m selling drugs to people who are really messed up. They need help! I’m not helping them! I’m making sure they stay addicted. Some of my customers have died! I think some of them are hurting other people, maybe even killing them! I don’t want blood on my hands!
BILL
You don’t have blood on your hands, Dave. If they didn’t buy the stuff from you, they would buy it from someone else. It’s no different than a pharmacist selling drugs at the drug store! Your customers just don’t have a prescription.
DAVE
But I’m starting to feel guilty. Sharon was telling me how sinful her life was and I’m thinking…. her life is sinful??? What about mine?? I need God to save me, too. But if I’m going to do that… I can’t keep doing this!
BILL
Dave… think what you’ll be giving up! You’ve made a lot of money doing this! Aren’t you guys buying a new place?
DAVE
Yeah.
BILL
Well… without this extra income… can you do it?
DAVE
Probably not… but at least I’ll have a clear conscience.
TOM
Oh brother! You tell Sharon that you’re not getting the new house and see how she feels about that!
DAVE
She wouldn’t want us to get it this way! I have to do this! I have to quit. I need God’s forgiveness!
TOM
You need to have your head examined!
BILL
Come on, Dave. You don’t want to do this. You’ll be throwing away a lot of money.
DAVE
I have to do what’s right.
TOM
What’s right?? I’ll tell you what’s right!! You keep working for us! That’s what’s right! This religious stuff is just crazy! You need to get that out of your head right here and now!
DAVE
You can’t tell me how to live my life? You can’t tell me how to feel and how to believe? I really think my wife is on to something!
TOM
(Grabbing him by the shirt and getting angry)
You are not going to do this thing, Dave. Do you understand me? You’ve got to just wipe it out of your mind!
DAVE
Why do you care? I’m no one to you! What’s your problem?
TOM
(shoves him back)
YOU are becoming my problem!!
BILL
Tom… cool it, man! We’ll get him to come around…
DAVE
What? Why should I listen to you two crooks? I can make my own decisions. I’m out, I tell you… I’m out!
TOM
I guess that leaves us no choice.
BILL
Tom… we’ll get him straightened out.
TOM
You better believe we will.
Tom pulls a gun from his pocket.
DAVE
Wait… what’s the gun for?
TOM
I just need to explain a few things. The gun helps get my point across.
BILL
Tom… is that really necessary?
TOM
Just shut up, Bill! You had your try and now it’s my turn!
DAVE
What? You’re going to threaten to shoot me if I quit? You’ll find other dealers! You HAVE other dealers!
TOM
You don’t understand, Dave. Nobody quits.
DAVE
What do you mean? I have to quit! You can’t force me to keep dealing for you!
TOM
(pointing the gun at him)
I think you’re wrong about that.
BILL
Tom… come on. I trust him. He won’t tell anyone. He’s not going to turn us in.
DAVE
That’s right! I won’t! I won’t ever tell anyone! I mean… I’m as guilty as you! Why would I talk?
TOM
Because. Because you’ll get ‘Jesus’ and ‘Jesus’ will make you do all the right things, and you’ll want to help all those people you kept supplied with drugs, who you kept addicted and strung out… because you will feel guilty and you will want to make amends… and at some point, you’ll realize that we’re working against you and you will want to stop us!
DAVE
No! No, that’s not true! Is that what you’re worried about? Because you have nothing to worry about! It won’t happen. You can put the gun away.
TOM
This is just a little persuasion. That’s all. To let you know…
(intensity builds now to shouting)
…that you can’t just decide to quit anytime you want!!
