In the first scene we find out why they had a falling out, as the son changes his major and begins to make independent choices that the father feels is simply rebellion. This causes the son to leave. But he returns some time later and wants to rebuild that relationship. The father’s heart finally melts as he realizes that his love for his son is more important than anything else.
Only 2 actors. About 7-8 mins.
Excerpt:
A young man is reading a magazine and listening to his iPod. The father enters, angry.
FATHER
You changed majors??!!
When he realizes that his son can’t hear him he hits him in the head to get him to take out his ear buds.
SON
What?
FATHER
When were you going to tell me? I had to hear it from your mother!
SON
This is why I didn’t tell you. You overreact.
FATHER
But we talked about this! It was all agreed upon.
SON
You know as well as I do that the only way we were ever going to agree was if I gave in to you. Well, I’m sorry, Dad… but I’m not you! I’m not cut out to be an engineer.
FATHER
You’re just having a hard time with your studies… it happens to everyone. That doesn’t mean you should change your major!
SON
It’s what I want! It’s what I’ve always wanted.
FATHER
But music? You know you can’t have a career in music! What are you going to do with that? Music is a hobby.
SON
See? You don’t understand me. You don’t know me. And you don’t know what I will be able to accomplish.
FATHER
You’ll end up being a teacher. You know you can’t make very much teaching.
SON
And it’s all about how much money I can make, isn’t it?
FATHER
You need to be realistic and practical. You can’t live your life with your head in the clouds. I thought you’d grow out of that, but it seems to be getting worse. What has gotten into you lately? I don’t get you.
SON
You got that right.
FATHER
You go out all the time with your new friends… we never see you. You missed church for the past 3 Sundays! What’s going on with you?
SON
I was in church, it just wasn’t your church. I went with my friends.
FATHER
What church was that?
SON
Southside Chapel.
FATHER
Southside Chapel?! They’re not even… (pause)
SON
What, Dad? They’re not even Christians? They teach the Bible there, too. It’s a good church. They just do things a little differently, that’s all.
FATHER
So now you’re going to turn your back on everything that we have taught you and what we want for you? You know what this is, don’t you? It’s a spirit of rebellion.
SON
You act like I’m off doing something bad. Like I’m out drinking and taking drugs and having sex! When the truth is that I’m actually being a good kid. I have good friends and I’m not doing anything wrong. I haven’t walked away from God. You know, most fathers would love to have a son like me!
