He helps Sneg discover faith and they start out on their journey. As the passage states, “… applying all diligence, in your faith supply virtue…” etc; they go from one to the next, learning these qualities and applying them to their lives. Faithful, a fairy-like creature guides them along the way as they meet a cunning seductress, a wise old man, an old seller woman, Sneg’s cousin, an evil troll and a woman with a baby. Once they have applied love, the final quality, Gabe is able to cross back through the portal to his world and though he forgets what he saw, he remembers what he learned.
10 actors (6 male and 4 female) all adult or older teens. One hour.
CAST:
GABE: A struggling Christian who falls through a portal to another world and learns about developing qualities along the journey of the Christian life.
SNEGILID: A strange looking creature from the other world who befriends Gabe and asks him to take him on the journey to The Eternal Kingdom. A good part for a creative person.
FAITHFUL: A fairy-like creature who helps the travelers all along their journey with encouragement and warnings.
SNARUDNE: Another creature who is a relation to Sneg. He talks constantly, and has a terrible complaining spirit, and low opinion of himself.
WISE ONE: An old Merlin or Gandalf type of character (could have long beard) who only asks questions to get the travelers to think and realize what they know. Good part for a character actor.
OLD WOMAN: An old seller woman trying to tempt the travelers to buy. Another fun character part.
TEM TOR: An evil troll who is really a demon trying to get the travelers to act ungodly and fall on their journey. A creative mixture of great make-up and over-the-top acting.
SEDUSA: An evil temptress who tries to seduce the travelers.
SISTER LEE: A woman with a baby, who has a need along the road.
STU: Gabe’s best friend who tries to encourage him.
Excerpt:
Gabe comes rolling on to the stage stopping about center stage. He
sits up and looks all around, seeming very confused.
GABE: Where did that hill come from? I can’t believe I didn’t see it.
Where am I? This doesn’t even look like the park. (Something moves
about in and out behind the scenery, popping up its head and ducking
back down.) Who’s there? Whoever you are, come out where I can see you!
(This strange looking creature comes out, looks sort of human, but
nothing like anything he has ever seen before) What are you supposed
to be?
SNEGILID: What are you supposed to be?
GABE: Very funny. You’re the one who’s strange looking. And by the
way, you really did a very good job. It looks very real. (The thing
comes up close and begins to touch his ears and look closely at them)
Stop that! What are you doing?
SNEGILID: What are you doing?
GABE: I’m trying to figure out what happened here. I rolled down this
big hill, and now I’m in an area of the park that I never saw before.
In fact, I don’t even see the hill. That’s really strange. I know I
rolled down a hill. Am I still in the park?
SNEGILID: You don’t know where you are?
GABE: Apparently not. And you are giving me the creeps. Do you
always do this?
SNEGILID: Do what?
GABE: Put on makeup and dress up like this and spook people.
SNEGILID: Does everyone look like you where you come from?
GABE: Okay, that’s enough. You can stop the act. It is very
convincing, but I’m getting tired of it. What is this place anyway?
SNEGILID: This place is called “Promise”.
GABE: Promise, huh? Well, I never heard of it.
SNEGILID: People from your world never have until they come here.
GABE: Oh, that’s good. Now cut the act and help me out here. And
take off those things… (He reaches for his big ears but is blocked
by the creatures arm)
SNEGILID: You take off yours first.
GABE: (slowly) Mine are real… (Looks intently at him) And so are
yours… Hey! What’s going on here! What is this place?
SNEGILID: Promise.
GABE: You said that already.
SNEGILID: You asked me twice.
GABE: You’re really weirding me out here. What am I doing here,
anyway?
SNEGILID: You were sent here…from your world to mine.
GABE: This can’t be possible. But this place is so different. It is
clearly not the park. I rolled down a hill, but there is no hill.
And you look so … I must be dreaming.
SNEGILID: You are Dreaming? I am Snegilid. (Pronounced: Snej-ilid)
GABE: No, my name isn’t Dreaming. I think I am dreaming… you know,
asleep?
SNEGILID: You think you are asleep?
GABE: I must be.
SNEGILID: Do people from your world always sleep with eyes open and
talking as if awake?
GABE: What did you say your name was?
SNEGILID: Snegilid. What did you say your name was?
GABE: I didn’t.
SNEGILID: I didn’t?
GABE: Okay, it’s Gabe. That’s short for Gabriel.
SNEGILID: Itsgabe?
GABE: No. Gabriel.
SNEGILID: Gabriel.
GABE: Gabe.
SNEGILID: Gabe.
GABE: Now tell me your name again?
SNEGILID: Snegilid.
GABE: Snegilid.
SNEGILID: Sneg. (snedge)
GABE: Sneg.
SNEGILID: I like you, Gabe. I’m glad you are the one who has come to
help me.
GABE: Help you with what?
SNEGILID: You were sent here to help me get to The Eternal Kingdom.
GABE: How do you know that?
SNEGILID: Everyone knows that.
GABE: Everyone? Well nobody told me. All I want to do is find my way
back to my world. I can’t believe this is even happening to me. I must
have come through some sort of portal.
SNEGILID: Portal?
GABE: Doorway. A doorway between our worlds.
SNEGILID: Yes. You came through the doorway.
GABE: Did you see it? Maybe you know where the doorway is. (He gets
up and starts looking around and feeling around)
SNEGILID: You cannot get back from here. You must go to The Eternal
Kingdom.
GABE: What is this eternal kingdom?
SNEGILID: It is where everyone wants to go! I want you to take me
there.
GABE: Oh yeah? Well, I don’t see how that is going to happen. If you
remember, I’m not from around here, so I hardly think I will know how
to take you there. I don’t know anything about this place.
SNEGILID: It is not hard to find. You just follow the road.
GABE: There is only one road?
SNEGILID: Only one road to The Eternal Kingdom.
GABE: That’s sounds easy enough. Why do you need me? Just get going.
SNEGILID: The road has many obstacles.
GABE: What kind of obstacles?
SNEGILID: I don’t know. I’ve never been on it.
GABE: Then how do you know there are obstacles?
SNEGILID: Everyone knows that.
GABE: I see. So, why do you want to go to this eternal kingdom?
What is there?
SNEGILID: It is a happy place. Everything there is good. All my
family is there.
GABE: Why didn’t they take you with them?
SNEGILID: Everyone must make the journey alone.
GABE: Those are the rules?
SNEGILID: Yes.
GABE: Then aren’t you breaking the rules if you take me with you?
Aha… see, I caught you with that one!
SNEGILID: You are not from around here. That is why you were sent to
help me. Sometimes we need help to get there.
GABE: Well, if you think that this kingdom is where I need to go to
find my portal back, I guess it would be better for us to travel
together.
SNEGILID: Then you will take me?
GABE: Yes…I’ll go with you. How far away is this place? How long do
you think it will take?
SNEGILID: Oh, not far…not long.
GABE: Hmmm. I’m suspicious. So, which way do we go?
SNEGILID: Do you see the road?
GABE: No, I don’t see any road.
SNEGILID: Neither do I. That’s the whole problem. I don’t know where
the road is.
GABE: I can see where that could be a problem. How do you know there
even is a road or an eternal kingdom?
SNEGILID: I don’t. Perhaps the stories aren’t true. Perhaps there is
no road.
GABE: Wait a minute. Who told you about the kingdom and the road?
SNEGILID: From time to time…they come by. They tell us stories about
the road and all the obstacles along the way… and how beautiful the
kingdom is. Life is so much better there. They tell about the son of
the all powerful one, who died and came back to life. So, one day, my
family decided that they would find the road and travel there. I was
afraid. I didn’t want to make the journey. They begged me to come,
but I refused. So, they left me and I never saw which way they went.
I just heard them cry, “The son lives! Long live the son!”
GABE: Okay…your family found the road, obviously. You refused to go,
and they went on. The road exists, and I believe the kingdom exists,
too. You just need to overcome your fear and your doubt.
SNEGILID: That’s it. I am afraid. I am so afraid that I will never
make it there. I think that is why I cannot find the road.
GABE: Well, let’s get rid of that fear. Come on, we need to find this
road. (He starts off)
SNEGILID: No! Wait! We mustn’t! It is too dangerous! I cannot do
it.
GABE: Do you want me to help you or not?
SNEGILID: Yes, I do.
GABE: Then you have to trust me. Or if not me… wait, did I hear you
say that your eternal kingdom has a leader?
SNEGILID: Yes, the all mighty and all powerful one!
GABE: Just as I thought. We have the same One in our world. I know
Him. He helps His followers find their way. See this book here? He
wrote this book, and I read it all the time. He will protect us and
guide us, and show us the way. I think He will even show us where the
road is. What do you say? Will you try?
SNEGILID: There are those who say that the son of the all powerful one
is dead. There are those who say that the road cannot be found.
There are those who say that there is no road and there is no kingdom…
and there is no all powerful one!
GABE: And what are these like, who say such things?
SNEGILID: They are miserable. They are alone. They are afraid like
me.
GABE: Aha! You see? You need to cast off that fear and believe in
the road, the kingdom and the all powerful one!
SNEGILID: But how will we find the road?
GABE: Where I come from, we have something called faith. I think it
might be the same thing here. You can’t see it, but its there. You
can’t touch it, you just have to believe. Others have found the road
Sneg, so can you!
SNEGILID: You are right.
GABE: We just need to take a step and believe that the road will be
there for us to see. Here, take my hand.
SNEGILID: (taking his hand) I think I should take the first step.
It’s my journey. The son lives! Long live the son! (He steps forward
toward down stage) Oh! There it is! I see the road! It was there all
the time!
“Tremendous! Excellent! You really know how to write dialogue—- the message is great; there’s humor; the analogies are very clear…. wonderful. Who would ever have thought to write such a story from 2 Peter? ….amazing indeed. All of the cast members like this play of yours—and many of them don’t just applaud anything. People here appreciate the talent the Lord has given you… (we definitely want to utilize your talents again)”
