Excerpt:

Margie is sitting in a chair pretty much immobile with bandages on 1 foot and leg with an IV hooked up and laughing and talking to visitors: Johnnie and Jo – Andrew’s wife and Young Becky – can have others on stage as well.

MARGIE (Laughing) No! Seriously! I really need you to do this! Each of you need to promise me that you will do these things when I die!

JOHNNIE But we don’t want to think about you dying.

MARGIE I know you don’t, but this is important to me. Now, Jo, you are to make sure that my feet are pointed outward when my body is lying in the casket.

JO. What? Pointed outward?

MARGIE Yes, I can’t have them laying there all cockeyed and pointing in every which direction! They need to be pointed outward.

JO. Okay

MARGIE Johnnie, please make sure that the preacher is notified and then also make sure that the singers sing the songs I have selected.

JOHNNIE Of course

YOUNG BECKY Mamma…

MARGIE Becky… you are in charge of my clothes. Please oh please… whatever you do, do NOT put me in anything pink! I don’t want any pink flowers or any pick anywhere around me!

YOUNG BECKY I thought you liked pink.

MARGIE No… YOU like pink. You are always buying and wearing pink stuff for both of us. I’m really sick of pink!

YOUNG BECKY Now you tell me.

MARGIE That’s right. I want you to put me in my royal blue dress that my sister, Frances got me.

YOUNG BECKY Alright..

MARGIE NO PINK!

JOHNNIE I take it you don’t want pink.

MARGIE You figured that out, did you?

YOUNG BECKY Mamma, must you be so morbid?

MARGIE I’m not being morbid, dear. I just feel it is time to talk openly and honestly. The time is quickly approaching and I just want to be ready… I mean, really, I am ready to go. I am SO ready! And I want you all to know that I love you all very much, but no matter how much I love you… I am tired and I want to go home.

JO. We get it Margie.

JOHNNIE Yes, we understand. And of course we will follow your instructions.

JO. To the letter! Well, Johnnie, if we are going to go to church, we had better be moving.

JOHNNIE Okay, you’re right. Let’s not overstay our welcome. Margie, you need to get some rest. I imagine we have worn you out.

MARGIE Nonsense. Having you here gives me strength. But I don’t want you to miss church. They get up and say their good byes with hugs or whatever and exit.

YOUNG BECKY Mamma.. I can’t believe you said that stuff. There is a knock on the door. Becky answers. RB’s relatives enter. A woman and a few kids.

YOUNG BECKY Oh, hi.. come on in. It’s so nice of you to stop by for a visit.. But Mamma has been visiting for awhile now with friends…

MARGIE Invite them in, Becky!

WOMAN (RB’S cousin) We won’t stay long. I hate to bother you folks, but I lost my job. I have been out of work for a little while now and we are just totally out of food and we don’t really know what to do.

YOUNG BECKY Oh dear.

WOMAN We didn’t really know who to turn to and then I thought, well, if anyone is kind enough and good enough to help us, it would be cousin RB.

YOUNG BECKY RB is not home at the moment…

WOMAN Is there any way that you could help us out with groceries till pay day?

YOUNG BECKY But if you don’t have a job…

WOMAN I have one more pay check coming, but that won’t be until…

MARGIE Becky, go to the freezer and get a frozen pizza and some frozen vegetables, some fruit and bread and then box up some canned corn, beans, peaches and spaghetti sauce and some other dry goods items for them.
