THE SAMARITAN WOMAN’S TESTIMONY

WRITTEN BY WARREN SAGER

SAMARITAN WOMAN: I met Jesus when I went to the well to draw water. He was sitting there and he said, “Give me a drink.” I questioned him about making such a request…for He was clearly a Jew and I a Samaritan. Everyone knows that Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Then He talked about how He could offer me living water. I didn’t understand, so I asked Him about it. He said, “Everyone who drinks of this water shall thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life”. Well, that peaked my curiosity. Never thirst again? What type of water is this? Is it possible to never thirst again? So I asked Him for some, so I would no longer be thirsty, or have to come all the way to the well to draw. It is a long walk to Jacob’s well! Then the conversation changed. He began to ask me… no…tell me all about my husbands. He knew how many I had previously, and He knew that the man I was currently with was not my husband. I decided then that He must be some kind of prophet. We then talked about different views on worship and I mentioned the coming Messiah. I guess I wanted to impress Him with my understanding of that subject. (Laughs to herself) I knew nothing. He told me that He WAS the Messiah. I ran home and found as many people as I could and told them about Him and I got them to come back to the well with me to hear Him. Somehow I convinced them. Maybe it was because I was convinced myself. He told me all the things that I have done! I can’t explain it…He spoke with such authority and with words that reached inside of me and touched my very heart. I felt ashamed of my life and all the wrong things I had done, and yet…He spoke to me as though there was hope and life waiting for me. He spoke of living water. This man had answers! You see…I had been searching for love and meaning for so many years, and all I had in my life was pain and failure. But when He spoke to me, it was as if He could see inside of my soul! Little did I know that this man, The Messiah…would die a horrible death on a cross just a few years later. Had I truly known the prophecies about Him…I would have been prepared for it. But I guess none of us really knew.
