Emzara’s Dream: The Untold Story Of Noah’s Wife

$35.00

This is a fictional account of Noah’s wife as there is very little said about her in the Bible. We have tried to stay true to the Biblical account of Noah, and just imagined how his wife and sons might react to his news. Also, to make this more fun, we have added talking animals.. which could be a lot of fun for the kids to dress up like the animals on the ark. The part of Emzara, (Noah’s wife) is very large. Lines can be removed or altered if need be. There are some long monologues as she just talks to the animals.

Cast of 25 plus extras. (at least 8 males, at least 12 females) Approx. 40-45 mins

LIGHTS UP ON:
SCENE ONE:
Takes place in Bible times during the time of Noah. Sets can be as elaborate or as simple as you would like. A young girl is talking with her mother as they groom an animal. (a dog or pony or animal of your choice) Animals are children and/or adults in costumes.
AVRA
Emzara! Come!
YOUNG EMZARA
(Entering)
I’m coming, Mother!
AVRA
Now, you’re the one who told me that you wanted to care for the animals…. So you need to pay close attention. Don’t be wandering off.
YOUNG EMZARA
Yes, Mother… I want to learn!
AVRA
Alright then… watch me as I brush it’s hair.
YOUNG EMZARA
Let me do it! I want to do it!
AVRA
Alright. But be careful, and make sure you brush it the same way that the hair is growing. If you go against the hair… it won’t work right. And they won’t like it.
YOUNG EMZARA
He’s so beautiful, isn’t he?
AVRA
It’s a dumb animal, dear. It does you no good to comment on it’s looks.
YOUNG EMZARA
Oh, I don’t know about that. I think he knows that he is beautiful and that I like him.
AVRA
Well, you like anything that moves on four legs.
YOUNG EMZARA
Oh, Mother! Not just four legs!
AVRA
Well, you’d be hard pressed to find a creature that has more than four legs!
YOUNG EMZARA
I saw a centipede the other day… they have so many legs!
AVRA
Oh! Silly me! Of course you would think of a crazy bug!
YOUNG EMZARA
Centipedes are great! Why do you suppose they are called centipedes? That’s a funny name, isn’t it?
AVRA
Emzara! Last week you were asking about armadillos! Will you ever stop?

(Later)

SCENE TWO:
Years later, Emzara is now a married woman with children. An older actress plays the part and she is again, grooming an animal. Noah approaches.
EMZARA
Where have you been? I thought you would be back long before now.
NOAH
Sorry about the delay.
EMZARA
It’s alright, I was just beginning to wonder.
NOAH
I’m sorry.
EMZARA
Are you alright? You look strange.
NOAH
I do?
EMZARA
Yes, you look like you’ve seen a ghost.
NOAH
Well…
EMZARA
Well? Well what? What is going on with you, Noah?
NOAH
I need to tell you something and I don’t know how.
EMZARA
What does that mean? You never had problems telling me things before?
NOAH
I know. But I never had to tell you this.
EMZARA
Okay, now you have my attention. What is going on? Is something wrong with one of the boys?
NOAH
No… nothing like that.
EMZARA
You didn’t go into the village, did you? You know how much I hate it when you go there. The people are so evil and dangerous.
NOAH
It’s the same everywhere.
EMZARA
Oh, I hope not! That would be just awful! What is the world coming to? I sometimes wonder what God thinks of this world that we live in.
NOAH
Well, you don’t have to wonder any longer.
EMZARA
What?
NOAH
I know exactly what God thinks.
EMZARA
Don’t be silly, how could you possibly know such a thing?
NOAH
Because He told me.
EMZARA
Oh, yes… of course! Right after He told you to go and fight a lion.
Noah says nothing and she looks at him
EMZARA
Noah.
NOAH
I’m trying to tell you.
EMZARA
Tell me what? Noah… what is going on?
NOAH
God spoke to me.
EMZARA
What do you mean?
NOAH
He spoke to me.
EMZARA
You mean you heard His voice? Like a big voice coming from heaven?
NOAH
No, not exactly.
EMZARA
I don’t understand.
NOAH
I heard Him. It was Him. He said, “Noah, the end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence…”
EMZARA
The whole earth?
NOAH
That’s what He said. The people are corrupt.
EMZARA
Well, that’s true. At least around these parts. Everyone I know is like that. Wait a minute! You heard an audible voice??
NOAH
I heard God speaking to me.
EMZARA
So… if I had been standing there next to you, would I have heard it, too?
NOAH
I don’t know.
EMZARA
So, perhaps you just heard it inside of your head.
NOAH
Emzara! He spoke to me! He said He was going to destroy them!
EMZARA
Who?
NOAH
The people! The corrupt and wicked people with the earth that he created.
EMZARA
Destroy all the people!
NOAH
Yes.. And the earth.
EMZARA
So He is destroying everything and everybody! You are saying that we are all going to die!?
NOAH
No. Not exactly. We’ll be okay.
EMZARA
So, he is going to destroy everyone on the earth but us.
NOAH
Yes, pretty much.
EMZARA
And how is He going to do that? Did you give you that information as well?
NOAH
Yes.
EMZARA
OH! He did! Well… do tell!
NOAH
I sense that you don’t believe me.
EMZARA
What ever gave you that idea?!! Oh, maybe it was the fact that you just told me that God spoke to you somehow… just how that happened is still uncertain… and that He plans to destroy the whole earth and all the people in it… but US.
NOAH
It’s true dear. He told me.
EMZARA
And why would He tell you? Why not just do it, if He’s going to do it?
NOAH
Because He is a loving and merciful God.
EMZARA
Oh! I missed that part.
NOAH
He wants to save us.
EMZARA
Just you and me.
NOAH
And the boys.
EMZARA
I see. And I suppose you know how He is going to do this…
NOAH
Yes, I do.
EMZARA
Oh! Do tell!
NOAH
He wants me to build an ark.
EMZARA
An ark? What is that?
NOAH
A big boat.
EMZARA
A big boat??
NOAH
Yes. We will get on the boat and we will be safe.
EMZARA
Safe from what? You put a boat on water… there is no water near us.
NOAH
There is going to be a flood.
EMZARA
A flood?! Isn’t that like lots and lots of water?
NOAH
Yes. The water will cover the entire earth and destroy everything and everyone.
EMZARA
Where is all this water going to come from?
He points up.
EMZARA
From heaven? How is that possible?
NOAH
Rain. Water falling from the sky.
EMZARA
How is that possible?
NOAH
I’m just telling you what He told me. It will rain for a long time… and the water will get higher and higher. That is why we will need the boat. And it is going to be a doozy!
EMZARA
A what?
NOAH
The boat… the ark… it has to be huge!
EMZARA
Why does it have to be so big? Just us and the three boys…
NOAH
And their future wives.. This is going to take me awhile to build. Plus we need room for all the animals.
EMZARA
All what animals?!!?
NOAH
He wants me to bring two of every species on board the ark, so that we can preserve all of them.
EMZARA
You can’t be serious!!!
NOAH
You know how you have always wanted to work with animals… well, now you finally get your chance.
EMZARA
My word! Do you know how ridiculous this all sounds??
NOAH
Yes… so, how could I possibly be making it all up?
EMZARA
You have a point there. Unless you walked out in the hot sun for too long… and now you are delirious!
NOAH
It really happened. Do you believe me now?
EMZARA
I may not believe it until that first drop of rain falls. When is that going to happen?
NOAH
After I finish the ark. And that is going to take a very long time.
EMZARA
How are you going to build it? You’ve never built anything like that before.
NOAH
Nobody has. But he told me how to do it. Practically every detail. I will need lots of gopher wood.

I’m a director at a Christian theater in NC, and I used this script for my class’s end of year project. The kids had a great time, we were able to use minimal props, and the audience seemed to enjoy it. I did have to tweak some things- I changed the number of animals to fit our cast, I had to rewrite parts of the village scene to make it more family friendly, and I added a scene with Noah preaching to the crowd to give it a little more depth (I made note of my changes in the script). All in all though, it was fun to work on, and I would definitely recommend it!
