THE SETTING: A DENSE FOREST. PERHAPS THE BACKDROP OF TREES, BUSHES OR FAKE ONES ON THE STAGE. AN ANCIENT TEMPLE IS BEHIND THE TREES, HIDDEN. IT COULD BE (PAINTED) ON THE BACKDROP AND THE BUSHES ARE MOVED ASIDE TO REVEAL.
THE ACTORS: 5 CHILDREN ENTER THE STAGE, DRESSED AS ADVENTURERS, PERHAPS SAFARI TYPE CLOTHES. 3 BOYS, 2 GIRLS.
SCENE ONE:
Five children are sitting on the ground facing Grant who is about to teach them something.
LIGHTS UP
GRANT
Hey kids… today we are going to talk about the temple. Does anyone know anything about the temple in Bible?
DIANA
(Raises her hand)
I know quite a bit about the temple.
CONNOR
Is it a lost temple, like in those old adventure movies?
DIANA
No Connor, it was not lost… it was built in Jerusalem.
CONNOR
But wouldn’t that be cool if it was lost and we had to try to find it?
Connor stands up and starts to walk downstage facing the audience looking off all dreamy.
LIGHTS OUT
SCENE TWO:
Five children enter the stage looking around and acting a bit concerned.
BRIANA
Where are we?
CONNOR
Yeah, Aiden, where are we?
DIANA
I think we are lost.
AIDEN
We are not lost, Diana.
BRIANA
Okay, so you know where we are? Enlighten us, oh fearless leader!
AIDEN
We are…. In the woods.
BRIANA
Oh, that’s brilliant, Aiden! I don’t know why I agreed to making you our leader.
DIANA
He is as good a leader as any of us, Briana. It would probably be a good idea to turn around and go back, though.
AIDEN
You may be right, Diana.
CONNOR
Or we could look at a map.
AIDEN
Oh, that’s brilliant Connor! If only we had one.
CONNOR
I have one.
BRIANA
What?
The others react as well
CONNOR
I have a map.
AIDEN
You have a map? Where did you get a map?
CONNOR
Back there.
AIDEN
Back where?
CONNOR
At the place back there.
BRIANA
So you have had a map this whole time? Let’s see it.
Connor pulls a map out of his pocket and unfolds it.
EVAN
Do you know how to read it?
CONNOR
It’s a map. How hard can it be?
DIANA
You kind of have to know where you are to be able to read the map.
AIDEN
Diana’s right. That map is useless to us.
CONNOR
But I do know where we are. The map just told me.
AIDEN
It told you.
CONNOR
Yep.
BRIANA
So, where are we, then?
CONNOR
We are right here.
DIANA
That doesn’t make any sense. Right where?
CONNOR
Right here. See? It says on the map, “YOU ARE HERE”.
AIDEN
Let me see that!
Grabs map and looks at it.
AIDEN
Where did you get this map?
CONNOR
I told you. At the place back there.
AIDEN
They don’t hand out maps with the words “You are here” on them!
CONNOR
Nobody handed it to me. I just took it. It was on a big board. Do you think I will get in trouble?
BRIANA
Connor, I think that map belongs on that board. You are not supposed to remove it.
EVAN
That “You are here” on the map, is where the board is.
