One of the favorite hobbies of mine has been community theater. I have done a lot more since I moved to Tennessee than my earlier years. Of course I would rather be doing Christian theater, at church or elsewhere; and even my own work. But that has not been so available in recent years, so I keep doing community theater. Both of the theaters that I usually perform at are Christian owned/based, they just do secular work. Tomorrow night is opening night & I probably have opening night jitters. We are closing up our tech week tonight & it is always a challenge. Things are still coming together, actors are still absent, perhaps some props are missing & you wonder if it will all be put together by the time you have an audience. I have done this so many times, I know the drill. And… somehow, it all comes together and the audience has a good time.
This time, the show is “Big River”, the musical about Huckleberry Finn. I am playing a con man, which is a new kind of character for me. At first, when asked to replace someone who had to drop out, I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. But now I have begun to enjoy this character and have fun with it. After our last rehearsal tonight, we will have 12 performances ahead of us. Because of my website, & customers all over the world, I have learned about various Christian theaters that do Christian themed productions. That sounds so exciting to me. I don’t know how successful they are… I know people pack out the church if they are doing a play, but it is usually also free. It was a dream of mine that I might open a community theater one day and maybe even get to do some of my own works. It was that or start a website and try selling them. Obviously, I chose the latter. This year marks 23 years that this website has been in business. I hope we can keep it going. Only God knows.
